Last night was the penultimate episode of Better Call Saul, which means I only get to recap season 4 one more time after this! So I'm stepping up my game - suffice it to say, spoilers ahead. Not just for Saul, but for Breaking Bad, as the timelines of the 2 shows draw ever closer to crossing their streams. Yet another character who has previously only been mentioned in off-screen dialogue prior to now has surfaced in Better Call Saul, and has given Hector his trademark bell. Will it toll for Nacho, or Werner? What's going to happen to Kim, and for that matter what fate is in store for the sleepless, guilt-ridden Howard Hamlin?Read More
I'm back, boys and ghouls! On tonight's episode, I discuss appropriately scary topics for October: trauma, social media, and the courage that all creative artists should have, and that all too few are exhibiting.Read More
I tried to distract myself from the depressing hearings of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh by taking up some of my listener's suggestions for comics and comic-inspired media, and - well, it was a bad day.
Neither Tom King's Heroes in Crisis nor the trailer for Dark Phoenix did much to improve my mood - although Daredevil Season 3 looks awesome, and I look forward to seeing whether DD is in fact Born Again when it premieres on Netflix October 19.Read More
It's Tuesday, which means I'm recapping Better Call Saul!
Last night's episode, 'Coushatta' shows that nobody is walking away from this season clean. Jimmy's redemptive journey is definitively over, and it looks like he's corrupting Kim! Even as we mourn her innocence, Nacho has gotten much more intense under Gus' tutelage, and Mike is struggling with whether he's going to have to kill a bunch of Germans who he'd hoped to bond with. But that lab's not going to build itself, and loose lips sink empires, so - yeah, it's getting kinda hot in ABQ.Read More
It's episode 30, and I spent the weekend catching up on email from listeners (send me your questions or comments anytime: firstname.lastname@example.org). Interestingly, I've received a bunch of emails related to my thoughts on comics - or comic movies, TV shows, etc. I answer those, and briefly discuss the weird videogame show that I hosted from the early 2000s, and the band that was my most frequent guest on that show - you're familiar with them. They're nice guys, but - yeah, this was not my proudest moment by any stretch of the imagination. But you asked, so I'll tell you all about it.Read More
After the "stinging" rebuke from this podcast (Episode 26 - You Can't Be Sirius XM), as well as over 150 musicians, SiriusXM finally caved and dropped their opposition to the Music Modernization Act. They've joined their peers, and the entire U.S. Congress and Senate, in allowing fair pay for the artists whose work enables their businesses to exist.Read More
Alright, you've asked for my thoughts on the Captain Marvel trailer - and for that matter you've been asking me to speak more about comics in general - so here goes nothing! Please remember I love comics and their creators and despise racists, sexists, misogynists and every other troglodyte and keep that in mind when I say it looks - well, you're going to have to listen.Read More
Shocking, totally unexpected news about platonic buddies Bert and Ernie!
Plus, I'm finally back to Better Call Saul recaps, so proceed with caution - this episode contains spoilers for last night's episode, as well as many other plot developments of this and previous seasons.Read More
Greg Maffei is the Chairman of the Board of both SiriusXM and Live Nation, which would be enough of a conflict of interest if he weren't also the single greatest enemy of musicians. As the head of both the largest concert and event promoter and the sole satellite radio service, he is the sole holdout preventing artists from getting paid what they're worth, or even guaranteeing that they get paid at all. SiriusXM is alone in their opposition to the Music Modernization Act, and in so doing they are incurring the wrath of an army of musicians, including Sir Paul McCartney, Don Henley, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, and over 150 musicians upon who Maffei's businesses are built.Read More
Time for me to spread the word about another amazing Netflix animated series! If you aren't watching Bojack Horseman, you are missing out on an incredible experience - some of the best animation, voice acting and storytelling available in any medium.Read More
Henry Cavill is apparently out as Superman in the DC Extended Universe, and reports are flooding in that Ben Affleck will follow him out the door, leaving someone else to take on the mantle of Batman.Read More
A day to never forget - September 11, 2001. I certainly remember what it was like for me, being a lifetime resident of downtown Manhattan and working in midtown, where the walls were see-through glass and (some of) the executives were heartless ghouls.Read More
In which I welcome the first guest to the Matt Sager Podcast, singer/songwriter Patti Rothberg! We're good friends dating all the way back to her solo debut album 'Between the 1 and the 9,' and so we've got a lot of catching up to do, starting with the release of her recent box set.Read More
That's right, I'm quoting Emily Dickinson because it's National Read a Book Day! I've been re-reading some hard-boiled detective masterpieces, and I always love me some Stephen King. Also, I hear this Woodward fella has a book coming out that the President isn't super excited about.Read More
I was going to indulge in another recap of the increasingly amazing Better Call Saul, but Amazon Video didn't hit a trillion dollar valuation today because they hire quality engineers! What, you think just because you bought a video from them, they're going to actually provide it to you?Read More
Not long ago (episode 5, to be precise) I made an offer to some old friends of mine at Westwood One. I guaranteed that I could fix their first podcast, Opie Radio, in one day and that it would cost them nothing. Upon further listening however, I now think that the show is beyond saving, and so I'm issuing an apology and a retraction, along with the audio that convinced me that all is lost.Read More
Ozark Season 2 premieres on Netflix tomorrow, and I can't wait! Jason Bateman makes a surprisingly believable anti-hero in this superb modern interpretation of film noir, alongside Laura Linney; 2 incredible actors putting in some of the finest work of their careers.Read More
I'm moving the show over to a brand new podcast host tonight, as I have big upgrades in store! In the meantime, let's play a quick game of "What's in My Box" as I answer a listener's e-mail, inquiring about how I got my first job in the entertainment industry. It's a fun story, but seriously do NOT try this at home!Read More
