As you know, the Animaniacs have pay-or-play contracts - which means they are earning money in their sleep. They get paid whether or not they ever work again. However, not content to rest on their laurels, Steven Spielberg, Amblin Televison and Warner Bros. are rebooting the much-loved animated series.
Indiewire broke the news today, capping months of semi-announcements and endless speculation. While the reboot is definitely underway, there are no details as to what it will look like - or for that matter what it will sound like. Core voice cast members Rob Paulsen, Jess Harnell, and Tress MacNeille announced a tour last year, but their involvement in the new series is unknown.
Similarly, it's not clear whether this reboot will be a retelling of old tales, new stories featuring the same characters and premises, or whether this will be closer to a Fuller House style sequel. It's also not yet known where the new Animaniacs will air, but like Fuller House, the original series is performing very well on Netflix. Perhaps that will be the home of the new series, or another online service like Amazon Video or Hulu.
The new Animaniacs is very early in development, so these questions will likely remain unanswered for at least a few months. However, speculation and investigative reporting are encouraged! In the meantime, we eagerly await the return of the genre redefining, multiple award-winning series.
