Netflix's brilliant animated series Bojack Horseman is returning for it's 4th season, and the first trailer is, strangely, very upbeat. This is odd for a show that explores serious themes of depression and life crises, albeit through the use of humor and anthropomorphized animals, voiced by an all-star cast including Will Arnett, Amy Sedaris, Aaron Paul, Alison Brie, Paul F. Tompkins, and more.
One obvious reason for the incongruous cheerfulness is that Bojack himself, the most miserable character on his own show, is missing. Both from the trailer itself, and from his friends and loved ones, who are clearly concerned. Even though Princess Caroline might be ready to start an inter-species family, Mister Peanutbutter is running for office, and Diane is - well, she's blogging, and is still dealing with her own existential angst. And although Bojack is nowhere to be found, there is a horse who looks an awful lot like him - this may in fact explain why he's gone into hiding, but as we've learned from the first 3 seasons, Bojack can't ever really hide from his problems. Because he is all of his problems.
Or, as Todd eloquently expressed it last season:
You are all the things that are wrong with you. It’s not the alcohol, or the drugs, or any of the shitty things that happened to you in your career, or when you were a kid. It’s you. All right? It’s you.
Bojack Horseman season 4 premieres September 8.
