Way back in April, I was hearing (and reporting - https://anchor.fm/mattsager/episodes/Joker-Trailer-Has-Arrived--Also-Happy-Birthday-to-RDJ--and-Angel-Anniversary-Reunion-Rumors-Persist-e3lhfg) rumblings about an Angel 20th Anniversary from David Boreanaz - which is ironic, as you’ll learn from tonight’s podcast. You’ll also learn that a reunion is indeed in full swing, with the cast reuniting for an Entertainment Weekly interview and photo shoot, and most of them convening right here in New York City for NYCC 2019!Read More
The first trailer for the Todd Phillips-directed Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, has arrived. There's a lot to unpack here, but what really caught my eye was a younger-looking Robert DeNiro, who is appearing in the Martin Scorsese-produced film, set in the early '80s as an eerily familiar looking late night talk show host. Sadly, this isn't Rupert Pupkin, but the imagery does ring true in this movie about a sad clown, and there are all kinds of Batman Easter eggs, though the movie itself looks like a combination of Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's version of the Joker's origin from Batman: The Killing Joke, with just enough differences that this could be an "Elseworlds" kind of story. Also, Happy Birthday to Robert Downey, Jr.! He actually has a birthday present for us - a fun crossword puzzle, which you can see here: https://twitter.com/RobertDowneyJr/status/1113828746891370496
Also, the Angel 20th anniversary reunion rumors persist - the latest cast member to hint at exciting things to come? None other than J. August Richards, aka Charles Gunn!Read More
It's time for another round of What's in My Box, in which I answer questions on anything and everything. Tonight, people are wondering why I'm annoyed by Bill Maher once again, and here's a link to the video that set me off, and which I discuss tonight: https://www.rollingstone.com/tv/tv-news/bill-maher-stan-lee-real-time-785005.
And on a much more enjoyable topic, I am asked for my opinions so far of the Boom Studios comics based on Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly. I've been waiting for an excuse to remark on these comics, so strap in for my many thoughts on both series.Read More
A legendary New Yorker, a father figure to me, and a man I was always proud to know and call a friend has passed away. Bleecker Bob's was where I shopped for albums and where I discovered some of the music that shaped me, with help and friendly ribbing from Bob himself. Robert Plotnik's store was far more than my local. record store - Bob's customers included people who traveled from all over the world to make their pilgrimage to his store, where Robert Plant, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix and others used to shop. It was heartbreaking in 2013 when Bob, who never towed the line or changed his store as New York grew more gentrified, finally shut the store down. Sadly, a major reason for that was his declining health. It's a devastating loss, but his life should be celebrated. The impact he had on so many, the contributions he made to music and culture, will live forever.Read More
