Apple had many announcements at this year’s WWDC, including upgrades to iOS and MacOS, and a new OS for iPads called iPad OS. I know, I have no idea where they get these amazing names from either! Then again, my podcast is just called The Matt Sager Podcast, so maybe I’m not really in a position to be calling out anyone on rather on-the-nose product names.Read More
Tom King had just told the Hollywood Reporter that Batman #85 would herald a twist that would "Change the Character for a Generation” - a change which would unfold over the final 15 issues of King’s run - when word abruptly came down that, instead, King would depart the title at issue 85, as opposed to his original planned 100-issue arc.Read More
Tonight’s episode contains some spoilers for Heroes in Crisis, up to and including issue #8.
I love it when you ask me questions - sometimes, like tonight, I dedicate an entire episode to the question of, have I come around to enjoying Heroes in Crisis? The short answer is “no,” the long answer is this episode of the Matt Sager Podcast. Enjoy, and remember you can ask me anything, any time! You can send an email to email@example.com, call (646) 535-4788, or listen to the end of this episode for more ways to get in touch with me.Read More
Angelina Jolie has reportedly signed on with Marvel, to play a character in their upcoming Eternals movie! Her character has not been named, but my money’s on Circe. Any other guesses? Agree or disagree, I’d love to hear from you so make sure to listen to the end of tonight’s podcast for all of my contact information.
Meanwhile, DC is reportedly yet again striking omnibuses, and other trade hardcover and paperback collections, which is always a downer. This one really hurts, as it includes an omnibus dedicated to the Bronze Age adventures of the best villain ever, and the later works of the inimitable Jack Kirby.Read More
Not long ago on this podcast (on the episode titled ‘Let Your Freak Flag Fly’) I mentioned several DC Comics cancellations that I found unfortunate. The axing of upcoming Vertigo series Second Coming was perhaps the most understandable, however unfortunate. Completely perplexing was the cancellation of the Absolute Swamp Thing Volume 1 trade hardcover, which would have collected some of the most-loved modern comics by titans like Alan Moore, Stephen Bissette, John Totleben, and Rick Veitch.
I’m happy to report that Second Coming is getting a - well, a second coming, as it’s been picked up by Ahoy Comics, and DC came to their senses and re-scheduled Absolute Swamp Thing, which you can pre-order from Amazon (affiliate link): https://amzn.to/2TxoGokRead More
It’s been a brutal day for media companies, who are laying off huge amounts of staff as they struggle to keep up with the ever-changing economy, to say nothing of technology and how to best attract readers and keep their advertisers happy. As the corporate boats at Verizon Media, BuzzFeed, DC Comics and others struggle to stay afloat, they are throwing staff overboard in massive numbers.Read More
Mike Francesa made a spectacular ass of himself when a caller asked him about how he felt regarding the passing of Stan Lee. Because Mike isn't a comics fan, the passing of a pop culture giant, the creator of our modern mythology, means absolutely nothing to the somnambulist sportscaster: https://youtu.be/3GLrKjmi22w
I, however, am still processing it, and take heart and inspiration from the information that Tom King has been stealthily paying tribute to Stan for years in the pages of DC Comics, and his telling of Stan's charming response to this tribute. I'm also quite moved, as I'm sure you will be too, by the sort of "lifetime accomplishments summary" he gave to the New York Times in 2015, which they've released in the wake of his passing: https://youtu.be/nQGKjlTbIWgRead More
There is no denying that Disney is going through a tough, uncertain, transitory time. Marvel's Netflix universe is collapsing, as the creator of much of its content has left for DC Entertainment. Daredevil's future is uncertain, and it's looking as though all of this is headed towards an exodus from Netflix in favor of Disney's streaming service, set to launch in 2019. Of course, Marvel needs to stay healthy before they transition to their new, proprietary platform, as does Star Wars.Read More
I tried to distract myself from the depressing hearings of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh by taking up some of my listener's suggestions for comics and comic-inspired media, and - well, it was a bad day.
Neither Tom King's Heroes in Crisis nor the trailer for Dark Phoenix did much to improve my mood - although Daredevil Season 3 looks awesome, and I look forward to seeing whether DD is in fact Born Again when it premieres on Netflix October 19.Read More
It's episode 30, and I spent the weekend catching up on email from listeners (send me your questions or comments anytime: firstname.lastname@example.org). Interestingly, I've received a bunch of emails related to my thoughts on comics - or comic movies, TV shows, etc. I answer those, and briefly discuss the weird videogame show that I hosted from the early 2000s, and the band that was my most frequent guest on that show - you're familiar with them. They're nice guys, but - yeah, this was not my proudest moment by any stretch of the imagination. But you asked, so I'll tell you all about it.Read More
